Overview

Synopsis: Rosettiform, solarizing to brown, with laminal granular to isidiose soredia; medulla K+ slow red brown or K-, KC+ orange, P-.
Distribution: Widespread in northern hemisphere, tundra to boreal and montane. Helvetia, Schleicher 279a, China (Wei 1991), Morocco (Egea 1996), Svalbard (Elvebakk & Hertel 1996 -- and see H. subobscura); Xizang (Tibet) (Wei & Jiang (1986). Kazakhstan (Wagner & Spribille 2005, unpublished list).
Habitat: cool temperate to arctic-alpine
Range: Southern Rocky Mountains, Arctic, Subarctic, Alpine, Northern Rocky Mountains
Substrate Notes: Usually on conifers, especially Picea, Abies, Pseudotsuga; occasional on tundra sod or moss over rock
